Haiti Slips Into Darkness

Events in Haiti are spinning out of control. Fear has gripped the northern city of Cap Haitian as rebels continue their march north taking towns and burning police stations along the way. While in Gonaives, the rebel stronghold for two weeks now, supplies are scarce. A food distribution collapsed today when residents stormed and looted aid packages from the United States. Many of Gonaives most needy left empty handed when paramilitary gangs assumed control and sped off with most of the supplies.
In Port-au-Prince an anti-Aristide march ended in violence when demonstrators turned on police. Several people were reported injured by gunfire and machette wounds and journalists were chased from the scene.
