Dixville Notch Victory

The first votes in the NH Primary were cast this morning at 12:01 am in the tiny town of Dixville Notch. And Clark took an early victory! Of the 14 registered voters of Dixville, 8 were cast in Wes' favor. But by day's end it was Kerry who won the state.

A Not Ready For Prime Time Player?

The Clark camp must be wondering if skipping Iowa was a mistake. This campaign has never really been about issues. Voters here seem intent on finding the strongest guy to beat Bush. And that, I think, is in some part influenced by momentum and the nature of this circus. Out of Iowa Kerry has momentum. But Wes' poll numbers have been standing still. A third place in NH puts Wes in good shape for February 3. But in the past two days Edwards and Lieberman have been threatening to catch him.

So...Where's the candidate?

With the number of journos growing by the minute up here, its become nearly impossible to make a picture that doesn't have boom mics, tape recorders and television cameras six inches from Clark's nose. And that my friends is why there is something called the OTR. In theory the Off The Record is a chance for the smallish travelling press to be with a candidate and shoot some quieter, more intimate pictures. But today, the theory has been just that. I've shown up at general stores, diners, and grocery stores only to find a hundred reporters waiting for us. Not happy.

Our chance finally came while filing in a bar in Portsmouth this afternoon. A staffer whispered that at 4:50pm We should nonchallanty find our way to the rear of the bar and wait outside the kitchen. Don't act suspiciously. And so the five of us, 3 wires and two agencies, were hustled down to Michele's barber shop for Wes' weekly haircut. Tomorrow the chase continues.

Two great quotes of note today from Wes: chanelling Hawkeye Pierce and in front of a health care forum, "How 'bout them nurses!" and when asked by a supporter if he could beat the other dems, "I'll beat the shit out of 'em."
